Just a heads-up that an unprecendented number of silent edits signed by “Anonymous” is occurring all over the nLab, and has been over the last days and weeks. I was trying to keep up with cleaning up after some of them, but it’s a flood and I am being overwhelmed.

For example, the entry unvalence axiom was substantially edited yesterday (rev 68) without any notification. The edit is something that could potentially be useful, but like similar such Anonymous edits it appears rather oblivious to the general logic of pages.

This would all be fine if the user(s) making these edits would be reacting to comments and taking advice and suggestions. But I am getting the impression they might not even be aware of the existence of the nForum, or otherwise choose to ignore it.

I am talking with the technical team about this. If these Anonymous users do not come out and become responsive, we may need think about altering the way users may edit pages.

Can you see if it’s all the same person, and where they’re based?

Yes, a large proportion of these edits comes from a single IP. We have now arranged that on the next edit request by this IP a message will ask the user to get into contact with us, here, before proceeding. I hope they will. They have an appreciable amount of editing energy which could be really useful for the nLab project if subjected to more interaction with the community.

Let’s hope they see how it needs to be a communal effort.

And this goes both ways: We’d need more volunteers who care and help deal with, guide, improve and polish-up honest but somewhat awkward edits by newbies, as in this case. There are a lot of these left to look into.

hello, so I tried editing an article today and upon hitting submit was told to go over to this url before making any further edits.

Welcome to all the new ’Guest’s having a written sign-off, even if a pseudonymn, would be a good minimum to help disambiguate people. Creating an account here and signing edits using that account name (again, not necc. a legal name) would be even better.

this wiki is significantly different from the old homotopy type theory wiki then because I don’t remember anything like this existing for the other wiki

    Hi, thanks for writing in!

I had lost hope you would do – and now I admit being surprised to hear that you just happened to interrupt your edit stream the moment you were blocked, without noticing the block. What are the odds! :-)

BTW, I tried to check, but it didn’t look like the HoTT community endorsed your edit activity either (e.g. here).

Aside from some genuine mistakes as in that case, I found most of your anonymous edits were oblivious to the text you placed them in, as if you didn’t read a word of the entries you were editing. I am reminded of this by your suggestion above that, after many dozens of edits, you never noticed that there is a little text pointing to the nForum right below the edit box?

I had supposed you are Ali – by the signature you seem to have left here (or was this maybe just somebody else’s signature which you blindly copied? ).

    What’s your full name?

“I had lost hope you would do – and now I admit being surprised to hear that you just happened to interrupt your edit stream the moment you were blocked, without noticing the block. What are the odds! :-)”

It was a coincidence, I went on vacation around the middle of June and just came back.

“BTW, I tried to check, but it didn’t look like the HoTT community endorsed your edit activity either (e.g. here).”

That particular edit activity wasn’t mine’s. The HoTT wiki from what I remembered never had any other articles on n-groupoids, except for an article on 1-groupoids defined as a 1-truncated type, and an article on a groupoid enriched in monoids, defined as a 1-truncated type where the identity types have the structure of a monoid.

“Aside from some genuine mistakes as in that case, I found most of your anonymous edits were oblivious to the text you placed them in, as if you didn’t read a word of the entries you were editing.”

I was rushing to get as much of the HoTT wiki copied over to the nLab as possible before I went on vacation, sorry.

“I am reminded of this by your suggestion above that, after many dozens of edits, you never noticed that there is a little text pointing to the nForum right below the edit box?”

I now see the text on the nLab’s editing page. The HoTT wiki’s editing page doesn’t have the text/comment section beneath the edit box btw, but otherwise looked identical, so I just assumed that the nLab one was the same as the HoTT wiki one.

“I had supposed you are Ali – by the signature you seem to have left here (or was this maybe just somebody else’s signature which you blindly copied? ).”

I am not Ali - note that I was trying to copy everything over to the nLab so that includes other people’s contributions to the HoTT wiki.

@11 I’m pretty sure that Urs Schreiber was referring to this article rather than the one he linked.

Okay, I understand you are saying that you were just mechanically copy-and-pasting text, nothing else. It’s hard to tell when several people are all using the same pseudonym while simultaneously active on the same topics.

Is there much of value left in the HoTT wiki that has not been ported over yet?

If so, maybe it would be easiest to mark that material on the HoTT wiki, maybe collect it in a new page “leftovers”, where nLab editors who understand what they are doing can grab it and port it over to here.

If not, then maybe we can declare the Hott wiki migration process finished.

Looks like when I was gone others had already moved the rest of the HoTT wiki over to the main nLab: HomePage (homotopytypetheory).
