<p>It posted fine, but since I could not preview the LaTeX, after I posted it I noticed some LaTeX errors that would not parse. I went to edit the comment and it says:</p>

<p>So there doesn't seem to be a limit for posting comments, but when I tried to edit the comment, the size limit won't let me edit it. Or so it seems.</p>

Hmmm. I thought that if a comment was too long then it complained before posting. I'll take a look and see what's going on here.
Ooof! I just looked at the comment and I think I know what the issue is. The latex->png plugin here swaps the double dollars for fake HTML tags, 'latex'. One unintended consequence of this is that for each piece of LaTeX, the comment gets lengthened by about 10 characters. I counted just under 60 pieces of LaTeX in that comment (now there's a sentence that could be interpreted in more than one way!) meaning that the comment stored in the database was about 600 characters longer than it was when you originally posted it. I haven't done a character count, but I'd imagine that that accounts for the 487 characters that you are now over the limit.

Do you only see the error when you try to save the edited comment, or will it not even let you edit it?
If we're hitting the maximum number of characters in a comment then perhaps I should consider raising that limit. It's presumably intended to keep things reasonably streamlined, but I guess we should regard it as a guideline rather than an enforced rule. I'll ponder it.

Here is what happened....
I composed a longish comment with quite a bit of latex. It posted fine, but as you said, when it converted $ $ to [latex], it pushed me over the limit. I could edit the comment in the editor, but it would not let me save/post the edits.
I've upped the limit to 6000 for now.
