Dear friends. I do not know if you noticed but if one works extensively, though item by item, for several hours, say, on references and links, in recent days arXiv tends to temporarily block you. I have had several times in last couple of days, “rate exceeded” instead of getting the arXiv data. When it happens it persists for some time. I have not used it massively, I have opened maybe 10-20 arXiv abstracts and 2-3 pdfs per hour, it might be that sometimes because of a bad connection, browser keeps asking a page which does not return and this contributes to more load attempts. In any case, it is not a malicious use. I do not know who among us have any contacts in arXiv community to notify this and if other people here hd this problem recently. I noticed it only in last several days and it is slowing down my work on nnLab in particular.

For example now I can not use arXiv at all.

It’s been a pain, but is it intentional rationing of ordinary users?

Yesterday their X account apologized for the inconvenience (here) and claimed to have solved the issue.

Though it doesn’t seem to be solved.

I get to see the “rate exceeded” message some of the time, other times the arXiv just times out on me (as it does right now…)

Oh, this is a relief, you say essentially that it is not a new policy, but a temporary technical problem. Then it is not a big deal. Thanks a lot.

Maybe a bunch of Large Learning Models are sucking in thousands of math papers.

I just saw an Atlantic article, We’re Entering Uncharted Territory for Math, where Terry Tao says he has tried out the new “o1 series” and found it better at doing math like reasoning than ChatGPT.

Yes, that seems to be it, LLM scrapers are overloading the arXiv server – according to the tweets here.
