  1. “Ass” is used for both the associative operad and the category of assemblies

I do not like having this page, and I think the fact two different things get called Ass by only some people in the literature (and the unambiguous Assoc and Asm by others) is an argument against using Ass generally in the nLab, and only acknowledging in passing that some references use it for these two different concepts.

I would like to add the line

The nLab uses and recommends the differentiated notations.

except it’s possibly not quite true, yet.

  2. Added a note to the disambiguation page saying that the use of “Ass” is discouraged on the nLab itself.

Do we really need to start this article with

“Ass” is an obscenity in the English language.

Are we trying to communicate something of value to the nLab here?

  3. removed the first sentence

“Ass” is an obscenity in the English language.

  4. Let’s wait until Urs Schreiber makes an official pronouncement on whether “Ass” should be discouraged on the nLab before adding the note to the page.

I think the community should come to an agreement, rather than that type of one-person decision.

And if there is a need for any centralized decision-making by a smaller group than the whole community, we have a steering committee (nlabmeta).

Personally, I think it’s okay to have a simple disambiguation page, but I don’t think it needs any discussion of discouragement or any reasons why. So v7 looks good to me as the permanent solution.

I think rolling back to the original version, which read

In mathematics, Ass can refer to

    • The associative operad

    • The category of assemblies

is slightly better. The current version, to my ears, sounds too pointed and too self-conscious.

Sure, that’s fine with me too. I don’t see a big difference.

In the end, I tweaked it only slightly. David’s word “notation” was an improvement over “term” (“abbreviation” would also have worked by me).
