Thanks in particular for the pointer to Garsgory-Francis. I had heard of this, but had not seen it yet. I’ll have a look. (By the way, our Person-entries are usually titled by FirstName+LastName, so entries Dennis Gaitsgory and John Francis exist, though they don’t currently redirect just the last names.)
One-name redirects of persons should be, in my ethiquette, be used only when it is likely that Lab will not have pages on other names with the same family name. For example, it does not look that there is another “Kapranov” or another “Lurie” of importance of Lab, but “Gelfand” is ambiguous – Israel Gelfand and Sergei Gelfand (the coauthor of the Homological algebra book with Manin and the son of I. M. Gel’fand and it gets much worse if we use it for names like “Smith” or alike. “Segal” also refers to various important scientists of our interest including especially Graeme Segal and Irving Segal.
