I’m going to do the server upgrade today. This will mean that the nLab will be out for a bit while the upgrade actually happens, and I’ll have to freeze edits for a bit longer (since I need to backup the database before I start the upgrade).

One of the purposes of this is to clean out the installation so that we have a clean slate from which to examine the set up to figure out where the issues with the crashes and slow-downs lie.

    Thanks for looking into this!

The main part of the upgrade is now done. The nLab is back up (though I haven’t put the redirect in place yet for http://ncatlab.org). I haven’t restored the files yet either.

The files and redirect are in place.

The piece that isn’t working right now is the itex server, which does the MathML conversion for this place! Something to dig in to this evening.

Something remarkable is happening: the nnLab has been running without crash ever since the server upgrade! Since 4 days now, and counting.

Maybe the moment that I say the following it will crash. But I’ll say it anyway: it almost seems as if the problem was fixed by the upgrade.

    That would be great.

Thre is still the locking bug. I just got made a reload of the edit page when it was over 3 loads and got “Internal error” and can not edit it rather than old-times message that it is locked with option/offer to break the lock. This is a temporary problem which goes away in an hour or so, but it is annoying, locks should be just locks, not the lock outs.

    http://www.ncatlab.org/nlab/locked/copyright

P.S: I removed my old sections on copyright issues and transferred it to my personal nnLab, but I left the short passage and few useful links on general copyright issues in science and mathematics. So it is definitely not a meta page but a content page.

You mean that it’s not about the copyright of the Lab but rather about copyright issues in mathematics, physics, and philosophy?

Yes, that was the original intention, look at the references which I collected there (having the links was the main thing). But I thought at the time that the people will be sometimes tricked by the title (as I was 100 times in 1990s by opening a new application and finding button About which had nothing about the application but the user-useless list of authors) so for apology I created the controversial copyright of the nnLab section which is now moved to copyright of nLab (zoranskoda).

I doubly clicked instead of once to edit in translation functor and got lock out response http://www.ncatlab.org/nlab/locked/translation+functor (Internal error if I want to edit that page). This is a typical way how the lock out happen. earlier you had an option to “break the lock” which does not work for few months. Have to wait now for an hour to edit the page because of single conflicting/double click. This is definitely a new bug (that is in last 3 months or so).

EDIT: I am now locked out of history of mathematics similar way.
