In stratified space, many of the references had page numbers given as if 123 { 234, rather than 123 - 234. This is probably a paste from somewhere else, but I was wondering how it happened so as to avoid it myself. I changed it. (Might it be a strange font?)
Yes, this happens to me regularly when copy-and-pasting references from a pdf. Somehow the dash is not recognized correctly. I try to watch out for this and correct it. But sometimes I miss it.
Sadly, it would seem that this is one of those problems that cannot be properly solved by the reader (or, in this case, the copier) as it depends a bit on how the original PDF was generated.
See http://tex.stackexchange.com/q/33476/86 for probably more on this than you ever wanted to know.
These should even be --
(to render as an en dash ‘–’).
