Someone wrote a paper containing our work on the correct way to understand second derivatives, later than us but probably independently of us: Extending the Algebraic Manipulability of Differentials by Bartlett and Khurshudyan. Note that they also have an application at the end to solving some second-order differential equations.
Actually, the most interesting part of that paper is not the application near the end but the historical discussion at the very end, showing how this stuff was known to Leibniz and Euler before it was forgotten.
