Over at Monster group, I wrote out a description via a group presentation. Of course, it makes no pretense to be illuminating (although it is well-known to experts like Conway; it’s probably in his book with Sloane on the Leech lattice and sphere packings).

    Thanks, Todd!

Is there any way to see at an ever so rough level why that construction should give the largest sporadic finite simple group?

Or else, might you have any other hints that would go towards indicating why that construction is what it is?

Mainly I just wanted to get something precise put down. It should be clear to everyone that I am not even close to being an expert, but I was reading some stuff last night on Conway’s description of the Monster which looked sort of related, and with luck I could transcribe some of that. I will try to see about that a little later.

Thanks. Sure, I understand. I was just wondering if you might have some inkling of how it comes about.

David Roberts’ query on the page is talking about this Cafe post. I don’t think there’s anything concrete to say in response.

    Something more concrete from here.

I think I just wanted the page to link to that nCafé discussion, but couldn’t find it at the time (and forgot about the query).

I’ve converted my question into a paragraph with the links David C supplied.

Regarding the Y-group presentation of the monster: I didn’t find the energy to attempt to summarize what’s behind it, but I did enter a brief paragraph and added some relevant references.
