The nLab and nForum are about to go down for a bit as we migrate to a new server graciously provided by CMU. (Thanks to Steve Awodey, who I believe, organized this.)
The DNS changes are still propagating so it may take some time for the site to come back up for everyone. Also, the nforum should be accessed from http://nforum.preschema.com for the moment (soon the URL will change to nforum.ncatlab.org).
Some internal URIs just broke in the switch from mathforge.org to preschema.com. For example, http://nforum.mathforge.org/discussion/5402/what-is-a-variable/?Focus=45448#Comment_45448 redirected to simply http://nforum.preschema.com/?Focus=45448#Comment_45448 instead of to http://nforum.preschema.com/discussion/5402/what-is-a-variable/?Focus=45448#Comment_45448 as it should.
More simply, http://nforum.mathforge.org/discussion/5402/what-is-a-variable/ redirects to http://nforum.preschema.com/ (or to http://nforum.preschema.com maybe) rather than to http://nforum.preschema.com/discussion/5402/what-is-a-variable/ as it should. There is probably some setting in whatever’s doing the redirection that could fix this.

Why preschema.com and not more appropriate preschema.org ?
Sometimes one has a device with free GPRS internet connection just to limites domains (like Kindle users have to wikipedia.org domain) and .org domains are maybe more often free in such cases.
Also, the nforum should be accessed from http://nforum.preschema.com for the moment (soon the URL will change to nforum.ncatlab.org).
When is this going to happen? It doesn’t seem to break anything internally because of relative URLs and forwarding, however it messes up things like external scripts, styling, and bookmarking.
Is Google now reindexing everything under preschema.com and will that cause duplicates when searching?
Also are the nLab and nForum going to be on physically separate servers where problems on one doesn’t affect the other?
Maybe there should also be a status.ncatlab.org which is far disconnected from the other two for reports and communication when the content servers are down.

If all gets eventually to a version of ncatlab.org domain, then my preschema.com vs. org remark is then not relevant…
OK, the redirects should be working now. nforum.mathforge.org and nforum.preschema.com should be redirecting to nforum.ncatlab.org. nlab.mathforge.org and nlab.preschema.com should be redirecting to ncatlab.org.
#7: the nLab and nForum are running on the same server. It may not be a bad idea to set up status.ncatlab.org (I could run that on my server preschema.com I suppose).
The links from my comment #3 above now break XHTML; on line 101 they produce the HTML

and then cut out (making them invalid). Although they redirect just fine now.
I now think that the problem here is just slowness. I can get various results such as the error above, 504 Gateway Time-out, and Firefox giving me a time-out error. All of these stem from some process taking too long and timing out.
Mostly I can get things to show up by reloading, but I can never get http://nforum.ncatlab.org/discussion/5402/what-is-a-variable/ to appear.1 But I can get it to produce all kinds of time-out errors!

Regarding slowness: I have been alerted today that also for instance the entry Science of Logic fails to display due to a “504 Gateway Time-out”. I have emailed Adeel about this.
I get that too. That's on the Lab, while the previous comments were about the Forum. But now that those are running on the same server, presumably they're subject to the same time-out restrictions.

A few minutes ago, this thread times out for me! It came up on the third try.
The lab appears to be down completely right now. Just a comment so everyone knows we are aware of it and trying to fix it.
And down quickly, so not because of time-out errors like those discussed above.
But while the Lab is down, the Forum is now very quick; in particular, I have no trouble with any of the Forum links in the comments above!

Yes, but I don’t think what caused the slowdown has been identified. If you notice slowdowns again, please send an alert, to increase the chance that somebody figures out what’s causing them.
The nForum won’t display this thread: 6352/necessity-and-possibility/.
One time it gave me a blank page that when I looked at its source looked like a real nForum page but at the bottom was:

Right now the source still has that line at the bottom but the page displays (in Firefox) as:

I get the same thing.
Similar for http://nforum.ncatlab.org/discussion/5402/what-is-a-variable/ again. At least the error is consistent now!
