I have posted the following question on MO.
Since it is very much in the scope of the nLab, I’m linking to it here, in the event that there are some category theorists wandering around here but not there.
I have skimmed through Todd Trimble’s suggestion, but I haven’t found the result… According to the preface to the book where the article is, and to the introduction to the article, a coherence theorem of the kind “everything in sight commutes” is false, and an easy counterexample is given; however, I believe that example is not hidden in my two statements.
