    Polar flip = reversal point of the polar fields
    Measurements of polar field strengths can be found on the website of The Wilcox Solar Observatory (WSO), and provides measurements of the polar magnetic fields that data back to May 1976. They have been used as a reference in many studies, due to the uniformity of the dataset. Time series of these measurements are available at http://wso.stanford.edu/Polar.html . On the left of the table you find the unfiltered polar field strength of all usable measurements in a centered 30-day window. On the right you find the filtered polar field strength, that eliminate yearly geometric projection effects for both Northern and Southern hemisphere. The average unfiltered strength measurements range between –140 and +121 micro Tesla and the filtered average between –131 and +106 micro Tesla. This range is not absolute, it changes for each sunspot cycle.

    New mathematical-physics principle
    However, the current interpretations of the strength of the polar fields have a major flaw: they overlook the fact that around zero polar field strength, the polar fields of the Sun change polarity. The north pole changes from negative to positive and the south pole from positive to negative or vice versa. And here we stumble on a physical phenomenon.
    For instance the north pole is positive (+) from December 2008 till mid-2012 while the strength for the filtered northern WSO field goes from – 51 to 0. At zero strength the north pole changes from polarity and is now negative (–), but the polar field strength goes up! To find the total polar field strength you need to multiply the negative sign with the strength: so next value is –(+10), then –(+20) to –(+40) micro Tesla…
    Conclusion: the total strength of the polar field goes down. In fact 0 is the high of the total northern polar field strength! Not the low!
