I definitely use nLab in a similar way to this. If I want a reference for something and don’t find it here on nLab… then when I do find it I often put it here on nLab so that I have it for a reference!

]]>Often I hear people say that they might consider contributing to the nLab, oh if only they didn’t have more important research-related writing to take care of!

Some of the most important things to make editing the nLab easier:

Editing or saving edited pages currently causes extreme delays and/or timeouts.

Obscure, totally baffling error messages that do not indicate the line/position where the error occurs. Also: “LaTeX error” for perfectly correct LaTeX code, so it’s actually “iTeX” error, and a totally obscure one at that (no indication whatsoever of what the error is).

Obscure modification of TeX (iTeX) that constantly obstructs my editing. At one point, I wanted to modify iTeX to fix the most egregious aspects, but realized that the scope of required works is so big, we might as well switch to MathJax and forget about iTeX.

Richard, thanks for this. I had silently been wondering if such statistics could easily be produced. Interesting to see that you had had the same thought.

One can see this reflected in the lists of most edited entries you produced: These are largely on those topics that I have been publishing articles about in these years (here).

The only exceptions are *CompLF* – which from its Idea-section sounds like it is Matt Olivieri’s research notes – and *Critique of Pure Reason* – which likely serve a similar purpose to Daniel Luckhardt.

Thanks for these, Richard. Yes, good to see some more contributors, but that Urs achieves around 2/3 of edits (and substantial ones, rather than the proof-reading which make up the majority of mine) is remarkable.

]]>Overall, I think we can say that 2020 was a good year for the nLab! Highest page edits and distinct edits since the early years (when many topics remained unwritten, so it was ’easy’ to add new material), and the highest number of authors with at least 5 edits ever! This despite much reduced activity from Mike, one of the main contributors in earlier years, and also from Zoran.

My non-statistical impression had been that the nLab has begun to see a bit of a ’new wave’ of contributors over the last few years, and more people seem to be chipping in to make contributions. Good to see that the statistics seem to support this!
