    I thought it was discussed another day that there are not such “nLab’s conventions” about units?

    I find such an edit really irritating. Moreover, I find the phrasing of the first version better.

    “a subobject of a ring in the category of rings” really sounds redundant.

    Both conventions as to the unit are out there, e.g., the even integers as a subring or not of the integers. The linked-to Wikipedia article claims the unit must be contained in the subring.
