    MathOverflow implements the arXiv trackback feature, which allows arXiv users to see which MathOverflow posts link to a particular arXiv article.

    I think it would be a great idea to support arXiv trackbacks on nLab. This would enable arXiv users to see which nLab entries refer to the given paper.

    The trackback protocol http://archive.cweiske.de/trackback/trackback-1.2.html is extremely simple and trivial to implement; every time an arXiv link is added to nLab an additional POST request should be sent to a URL of the form http://arxiv.org/trackback/{paper_id} with the content being the nLab URL and the title of the entry.

    What happens when the link is effectively removed? Is the trackback also removed then ? We do that often mostly when entries split into more specialized entries. There is also a concern, namely we write about our own interests and our own articles will be added when useful for our discussion. Then it will appear that when some person looks at say my articles, it will see many trackbacks to nLab and could think wrongly that I cited my work in nLab just to get trackback and more publicly inhabitted place like arXiv. This way nLab stops being a back-lab and open notebook and becomes a propaganda-prone tool. Just a concern.

    I find Dmitri’s suggestion quite excellent. Of course it is Adeel who has to decide if he has the energy to implement this, but I think it would be nice.

    What Zoran voiced seem valid concerns, but to me they seem to be concerns about the arXiv trackback system in general and are not specific to the nLab.

    Thanks for the suggestion! I agree it is a good idea. Zoran, I’m not sure whether that’s possible. Maybe it’s the responsibility of the arXiv to allow authors to delete trackbacks from their articles.

    I will take a look at implementing this when I get a spare moment.

    I think we should also check with an arXiv maintainer (I think this is what the MO people did), because there will be an initial flood of trackbacks once the system is initialized.
