    At some point within the last two hours, the following behaviour showed up:

    the rendering of

      $$
        \begin{aligned}
          \underset{A(1)}{\times} A
          & \simeq
          A
        \end{aligned}
        \,.
      $$

    has no whitespace after the second “AA

    ×A(1)A A. \begin{aligned} \underset{A(1)}{\times} A & \simeq A \end{aligned} \,.

    Somehow it’s the parenthesis in the subscript that causes this, for without it

      $$
        \begin{aligned}
          \underset{A}{\times} A
          & \simeq
          A
        \end{aligned}
        \,.
      $$

    then

    ×AA A. \begin{aligned} \underset{A}{\times} A & \simeq A \end{aligned} \,.

    Bizarre!

    It seems to be the width of the underset expression;

    ×A1A A. \begin{aligned} \underset{A1}{\times} A & \simeq A \end{aligned} \,.

    is fine, but

    ×A11A A. \begin{aligned} \underset{A11}{\times} A & \simeq A \end{aligned} \,.

    is bad.

    The MathML produced by my two examples is identical (except for the extra ‘11’), so this seems to be something about how Firefox renders MathML. (Are we all looking at this with Firefox?)

    Ah, thanks for sorting this out, Toby.

    Hm, I feel sure that this problem didn’t occur before yesterday afternoon CET. That’s when I noticed that on some nnLab page which I have been working on for days suddenly the spacing came out wrong. Strange.

    Anyway, what could we do? If it is a problem with Firefox, what would be a site for reporting this bug?
