Does anybody know what happened to Smith? The Wikipedia page says “former professor at Purdue”. Curiously, he is not on the list of emeritus faculty at Purdue: https://www.math.purdue.edu/people/emeritus.html. He is also not on the list of emeriti at the University of British Columbia, where apparently he had a position after Purdue: https://www.math.ubc.ca/People/people.shtml?group=Emeriti+and+Retirees, but he was listed at the faculty page in 2014: https://web.archive.org/web/20140717153343/https://www.math.ubc.ca/People/people.shtml?group=Faculty.
