I don’t have any grand plans for this page, but thought I’d add it as food for thought. Also added a new section ’Philosophical musings’ to foundations of mathematics, and linked to this page there.

I don’t think I plan on pursuing this far. But what do you think she has in mind when she uses the word ’algebra’? Besides through her brother, was she in any contact with modern mathematics (meaning of course the mathematics flourishing at the time she was)?

’Algebra’ can have many significations, almost a Rorschach. I don’t know much about the author – I’ve picked up odd scraps here and there.

Added link to a source for the original French text. Info about the translator(s) would be nice, but that’s for Richard to add.

    Besides through her brother…

Quite a window on mathematics for her. There’s his 14-page letter to her for a start. And a fragment of another letter:

    • Weil, André (1940).Une lettre et un extrait de lettre à Simone Weil. in Weil, Œuvres Scientifiques/Collected Papers. Vol. I. New York: Springer-Verlag., pp 244–256.

Serge Lang was none too complimentary here.

She met other members of Bourbaki too, photo.

Re #4, 5: thanks; I was aware of this.
