    I was looking for texts that would talk about the evident (!?) idea that codim=2 defect branes are candidate models for anyon statistics. After a fair bit of searching, I have now found a single reference:

    the idea is mentioned, very briefly and explicitly tentatively, on p. 65.

    ah, here is a concrete implementation of anyonic defect strings in 4d TQFT:

    Now I remember that I used to have more references on anyonic strings in 3d toic code models. Will dig them out. But holiday duties first now :-)
