I am thinking that we should have in regular intervals posts on the nCafe in which we briefly summarize and highlight recent nLab activity. Maybe every 500 entries or so would be a good interval. Since I did a post like this when we crossed the 3000-entries-mark, and since we are slowly but steadily approaching 3.5K entries, this would mean that maybe in one or two months or so it would be time for the next one.

This next one I am hoping we can make more contentful and more useful by having every regular contributor here write a short paragraph on what he (or she, if we have unexpected newcomers until then) was working on lately, as far as nLab entries (on the main or on a personal web) are concerned, or what entries are regarded as particularly intersting, or – notably – which not-yet existing entries the person would like to see come into existence.

I like this idea a lot. I think regular contributors could also usefully point to noteworthy things other contributors have done.

I also think this is a great idea. I’d like to see stuff put on the “Notice board” here as well.

Agreed, that would be great. As long as the week downtime of the Cafe hasn’t lost us all of our readers; not much has happened since we came back. (-:

We don’t have to bind ourselves to the fact that we have 10 fingers. If blog posts are needed to reactivate nCafe discussion, we can also make a blog post about recent nLab activity right now, in celebration of entry number.. let’s see.. 3370.

Sorry for the dumb question, but what is the notice board for and how is it different from a “discussion”?

Not a dumb question! I still haven’t written up a decent introduction to all the new “features” of this site, one of which is the “Notice board” (or the “Notices” tab along the top, since “Notice board” is too long). Technically, it’s a “blog” area of the forum. Less technically, any comment (note: comment, not discussion!) can be “stuck up” on the notice board for all to see.

My idea is that people working here will have particular “areas” in which they prefer to work. For example, a devoted nlabber will choose the ’nlab’ main category as their “Home” and ignore everything going on in the atrium. And most people will follow certain discussions and ignore others. But every now and then, something will be said in a discussion that perhaps deserves a wider audience than those who are just following that discussion. Then the relevant comment (or just a “Hey everyone! Urs has just proved the Riemann Hypothesis deep down in the discussion entitled ’A minor technicality on formatting of redirect names’.”) can get stuck on the notice board for all to see.

In summary, via configuration, bookmarks, and RSS feeds, I want the “average user” here to be able to filter out all the “noise” generated by other people working. But there also needs to be a way to get other people’s attention.
