    One student in Zagreb had done a diploma (under Svrtan’s guidance) on the Gelfand-Smirnov approach few years ago, but then switched to the subject of automorphic forms/representation theory so we already forgot about most of the subject. It is part of a general picture of “formal geometry”. I have the feeling that Gosha Sharygin was telling me last year some new related “combinatorial” ideas on Gel’fand-Smirnov but I may mix it up.
