For a long time, the has redirected to generalized the. The line [[!redirects the]] is still there at the latter page. But the redirect no longer works! (It worked fine before.)
Well, I re-saved generalized the (with minor edits), and that made it work again. But for a while it wasn’t. (I was invited to create a new page instead.)
I had noticed that something was wrong with that redirect!
Redirects and even plain links between entries may break on the nLab when two entries are edited and saved almost simultaneously. That happens regularly to me. Then re-editing (changing some whitespace) and re-saving fixes things again.
I don’t know if this happened here, but sounds like it did. Was the redirecting link broken from just one entry, or from all that had the link?
The redirecting link was broken on the entry von Neumann algebra (which Todd saw), from the changes to that entry (which I saw), from the Forum (in my post here), and from typing in the URI directly.
Hm, okay, then I don’t know. On the other hand, from what I described above it seems clear that each time an entry is saved, there is a brief moment where it disappears from the list of entries before it then reappears. And it happens by unlucky coincidence that other entries ask for the given one the moment it has disappeared.
If this has happened here, then it’s an “old bug”. But of course it seems unlikely now. Maybe it’s really a new bug. (Not that this makes much of a practical difference, of course.)
Yeah, ‘new’ here just meant ‘new to me’ (^_^).
