Do you want to scale the actual images or just how they appear? If the former, what system are you on? If the latter, I don't know if there's a markdown syntax but you can always include raw XHTML (but it's your responsibility to ensure that it is valid!).
Scaling the actual images is always friendlier to the viewer; faster to download.
Well, except that if you scale images to just the right size then someone who needs to magnify pages to read them gets a short deal. I think it's worth looking into the advice of some of the accessibility people (must be easy to find!) to see what the best original size for an image is. Obviously one doesn't want to have it too big otherwise one does run into the download speed problem, but, for example, twice as big wouldn't be too problematic. I guess that's one advantage of SVGs so absolute best would be to convert them all into SVG.
