A lot of new visitors have trouble entering math on the forum. It ought to be easy to add some more descriptive help text to the formatting options below the post. Could it say something like
To use (La)TeX mathematics in your post, make sure “Markdown+Itex” is selected and put your mathematics between dollar signs as usual. Only a subset of the usual TeX math commands are accepted; see here for a list.
?
Hopefully Richard sees this. I suppose he or Adeel would have to do that.
Yes, it looks easy. I will try to do this now. The main obstacle is that the nforum seems to live only on the nLab server (i.e. we do not seem to have a git repo for it), so I need to try to set up a local copy to test with.
It’s taking a while to download. Once it’s done, I’ll test locally, and then make the change here. Hopefully sometime this evening, I’ll update when it’s done.
Thanks!!
I am currently working on it, not done yet. Unfortunately the way the nForum is set up means that it is very difficult for me to test locally, so I am having to do it live. Very far from optimal.
OK, I’m done for the moment. Please take a look, and let me know if you would like me to tweak something.
(PS - I am off to bed shortly and am unlikely to be able to do anything during my working hours tomorrow, so please accept my apologies if I am not able to act on any requests until tomorrow evening European time).
Looks great to me, thanks!!
The only suggestion I can think of is maybe to reduce the font size a little, to make it less distracting? What do other people think?
I can certainly do this if people wish. We can also use the brown colour that is otherwise used if people would like that.
Brown color to match the formatting radio buttons below it would also, I think, be an improvement. If you agree, I say go ahead and make the changes and let someone bring it up if they don’t like it. (-:
I would second Mike’s proposal. It would be a help and look good as well.
It took me a while to locate the correct colour, but I believe I found it: #834300, for the curious!
I’ve set the font size to 0.8em. I tried a few different ones, and this one looked reasonable to my eyes in my browser. Let me know if you’d like it larger or smaller.
Thanks, Richard!
Maybe while we (you) are at it: We also keep having to tell users how to do hyperlinks to nLab entries here, it would be useful if that could also be explained below the edit box.
Something like: “To produce a hyperlink to an nLab entry, simply put double square brackets around its name.”
Done! Let me know if you want me to tweak it.
Looks great – thanks, Richard!
Looking good, thanks!
This looks just about perfect. I would probably remove the paragraph break between the hyperlink sentence and the TeX sentences, just to reduce the vertical space wastage, but I don’t feel strongly about that.
Done! I agree that it looks better this way. But let me know if people would prefer it with the paragraph break.
Awesome, thanks! This is a big improvement, I think it will help newcomers a lot.
Yes, that’s very good. We should have done this much earlier. Thanks, Richard.
