Prodded by arXiv:2108.05369 from a few days back, I am giving in and starting a list of references including the recent activity from pure string theorists on “2-group symmetries”.
For the moment I made it a new References-subsection here, but I guess I’ll make this an !include
-page, since it should also go to the entry Green-Schwarz mechanism and elsewhere.
(I had been hesitant to start making this list, even after the topic started to take off with arXiv:1802.04790, since it is not so clear whether higher group/gauge theory as such is used by many of these authors, or whether they just got convinced to terminologically relabel higher degree Bianchi identities as reflecting “2-group symmetry”. Some emails got exchanged on this point, but maybe it requires a conference meeting to sort this out in person. In any case, since, at the very least, the terminology keeps coming up more and more often now in stringy articles, we should have this reflected on the Lab. But, for the time being, I’ll refrain from adding any commentary with these references. Maybe later.)

Have expanded a little the section Examples (here, which was previously just a small list of links):
Added a paragraph highlighting the distinction between higher gauge theories of Maxwell/Yang-Mills type on the one hand and of Chern-Simons theories on the other, and then added some words on “higher gauge theories of Maxwell type”.
