Some things are too simple to be simple.
I could not resist being the first to create a stub for true.
“More advanced treatment”
“More advanced treatment”
This also sounded strange to me. Also, I thought that saying that the (-2)-groupoid is the true truth-value in “categorical logic” was misleading, because it is naturally identified as the true truth value in the classical logic internal to Set.
I edited true a bit to reflect this. If you are not happy with this, feel free to roll back.
@Urs: I think it was meant as a joke. I quoted it because it made me giggle.
Okay, I admit I don’t get the joke.
Let’s hear what John thinks about the new version of the entry.
It didn’t sound like a joke to me. I thought John meant that the man off the street is not conversant with the notion of (n)-groupoid for negative n, or doesn’t know he’s conversant with that.
My reading was similar to Todd’s.
I think Urs need a beer. Here you go
(Too bad we don’t have icons here. Every forum needs a beer icon :))
@Todd: I dunno, it just seemed tongue-in-cheek to me. It’s talking about “more advanced treatments” of the most degenerate object in all of mathematics. (Okay, maybe the empty set, but still…)
Every forum needs a beer icon
I like the animated ones, personally. :)
Seriously, though, I still have issues with the fact that so many colloquial words and terms have been given separate mathematical meaning (e.g. true). It makes conversing with mathematicians very difficult.
Understanding degenerate objects can be very tricky! But I read it as more advanced treatments of categorical logic, rather than more advanced treatments of the true proposition.
As for icons, you don’t need any local to the forum when you have entire WWW at your disposal. So have a beer:
I freely admit that I don’t understand the subtext of the beer discussion.
Anyone any comments on my latest edits to true?
@Urs: I like them. I made some more.
It was a joke. I’m glad some of you got it. But I didn’t intend for this joke to stay there forever… I just wanted to create the stub so people would improve it.
I freely admit that I don’t understand the subtext of the beer discussion.
The beer subtext is that we’re hoping you can find some time to enjoy yourself and not take things too seriously.

And I thought Urs was German? German beer is like the nectar of the gods!
